The medieval village of     Orta San Giulio

Orta San Giulio is a very special village located on little known lake Orta. This enchanting "borgo" as well as its lake are far more beautiful and interesting than many other popular resorts on other Italian lakes.

The village of Orta preserves many ancient buildings and elegant villas including a 16th-century painted building in the main square known as "the Palazzotto". Along the main pedestrian streets are some nice shops and cafes, while from piazza Motta it is possible to take a motorboat or ferry for a visit to the lovely island of San Giulio, named after a Greek evangelist called Julius.

The Sacro Monte - Holy Mount - is definetely worth a visit. It was built on the promontory behind the medieval village and it is a Unesco site which includes twenty chapels that were decorated with frescoes and statues between 16th century and 18th century  by remarquable artists.
