LAKE ORTA, A MUST-DO TOUR!

Lake Orta and lake Maggiore are separeted by the big massif of Mount Mottarone. Lake Orta is smaller than its famous neighbour and almost unheard-of. But it is a little jewel not to be missed! The landscape is magical: green hills, little villages and woodlands and the pearl of lake Orta: a medieval village that lies at the southern end of this gorgeous lake. The name of this lovely village, once fortified, is Orta San Giulio which is included in the list of the top 100 most beautiful villages in Italy!

The alleys in the village are narrow and picturesque. Old buildings to discover, nice shops, restaurants and bars where it is possible to enjoy a nice meal.

An important attraction is the island of San Giulio - Saint Julius island - that can be reached at any time of the day from the main square of the village. The romanesque basilica on the isle dates back to the 11th / 12th century and is worth a visit: an ancient pulpit and beautiful frescoes are hidden inside. On the island is only one alley built among the elegant summer homes: that path is dedicated to silence and meditation and also leads in front of the Abbey where many nuns live.

ANother attraction one shouldn't miss is the Unesco heritage site that was built on a hill behind the village. it's the Sacro Monte of Orta - Sacred Mount - of st. Francis of Assisi where visitors can walk through chapels with statues and frescoes.

• This can be a half-day or full-day tour

• You will be picked up at your hotel / town and transferred in a private vehicle to the centre of Orta San Giulio (where access is forbidden to cars and buses). Free time for your visit. The driver will drive you to the Unesco site (Sacred Mount) before the return to your chosen destination / hotel

• The driver will be able to give you all the useful information but he is not a tour guide. Passengers will be visiting their chosen destination on their own.

• The driver's responsibility to the passengers ends once they have been dropped off
