Vigezzo Valley Santa Maria Maggiore and Re

Vigezzo valley is a nice area located in the Alps that divide Domodossola from lake Maggiore and from the Italian-speaking part of Switzerland. Also known as the "Painters valley" because a number of good painters were born in the valley, Vigezzo valley includes many nice villages. One of them is Santa Maria Maggiore where a special museum is housed: the Chimney Sweep Museum, dedicated to the history of this traditional activity. Many local chimney sweepers migrated abroad to work in big European cities. Another interesting village for a visit is called Re. The village itself is really tiny, but the important Sanctuary that was built is really impressing and worth a visit! It's the sanctuary of the Madonna of the blood, built after a miracle that occured in the village at the end of the 15th century, when the face of a Madonna breast-feeding that was painted on the wall of the little church in the village was bleeding.

Driving further on it is possible to reach the lovely town of Locarno in Switzerland (on lake Maggiore)
