The Borromean - Borromeo - islands are the highlight of lake Maggiore. If you are not staying in Stresa, Baveno and Verbania this day excursion can easily be arranged hiring a private taxi that will accompany you to the nearest lake Maggiore's landing stage where you will be able to catch a boat to reach these islands.

You may decide to visit all 3 islands - Bella, Madre and Pescatori (Fishermen's island) or just one or two.

Isola Bella: it is the most famous one and it houses a 17th-century baroque palace with many rooms that were richly decorated, 16th-century tapestries, an important collection of paintings and a beautiful Italian-style garden built on 10 levels with statues, fountains, obelisks and many exotic plants.

Isola Madre: it was the first island bought by the Borromeo's ancestors in 1501. Its English park is something special where you will be able to see trees and flowers from all over the world. Phaisants, parrots together with colourful and white peacocks live on this island. A beautiful cypress from Cachemere was planted on the island in the 19th century and dominates the gardens. The villa dates back to the beginning of the 16th century and houses some nice rooms dedicated to the puppet theatre.

Isola Pescatori - The Fishermen's island - is occupied by a quaint village once inhabited by many fishermen. It is really picturesque with its old houses, the little shops and the inviting restaurants and cafés.

• This can be a half-day or full-day excursion

• You will be picked up at your hotel / town and transferred in a private vehicle to the landing stage in Stresa. Free time for your visit and return to your chosen destination / hotel

• The driver will be able to give you all the useful information but he is NOT a tour guide. Passengers will be visiting the islands on their own
